NHS IVF Eligibility Calculator

This independent UK checker helps you compare your circumstances with the broad NHS and NICE IVF criteria. NHS-funded IVF rules vary by nation and, in England, by local Integrated Care Board (ICB), so it cannot make a final funding decision.

Who can get IVF on the NHS?

The NHS says you may be able to get IVF if you are aged 42 or under and meet the relevant eligibility rules. For people aged 39 or under, NICE guidance supports up to three full cycles when specified fertility criteria are met. For ages 40 to 42, NICE guidance supports one full cycle when additional conditions are met, including no previous IVF and no evidence of low ovarian reserve.

Why NHS IVF eligibility varies

National NICE guidance does not mean every area funds exactly the same treatment. In England, local ICBs decide who can receive NHS-funded IVF and how many cycles are funded. Local policies can add criteria relating to age, BMI, smoking, previous treatment and whether either partner already has children.

How to use this calculator

Enter your location, age, time trying to conceive, previous IVF cycles and the other requested details. The result highlights issues that may matter when you check your actual local policy. It deliberately does not return a definitive eligible/not-eligible decision because doing so without your current local policy could be misleading.

Common eligibility factors

  • Age of the person who would become pregnant
  • Duration of infertility or previous insemination attempts
  • Previous IVF treatment
  • Ovarian reserve and clinical assessment
  • BMI or weight criteria in some local policies
  • Smoking status in some local policies
  • Existing children in some local policies
  • Your local NHS commissioning policy

Worked example

A 34-year-old in England who has been trying for 24 months and has had no previous IVF may fit the broad age and duration pattern described in national guidance. That still does not confirm NHS funding: their GP and local ICB policy must be checked for BMI, smoking, existing-child and other local requirements.

Important limitations

This tool cannot assess ovarian reserve, the cause of fertility problems, whether IVF is the only effective treatment, or all local funding rules. Policies can change. Your GP, fertility team and local NHS commissioner are the appropriate sources for a current eligibility decision.
