Calcium Calculator UK NHS

This independent UK calcium calculator estimates calcium from common foods and drinks. It is a dietary screening tool, not an NHS diagnostic tool.

Daily calcium calculator

Enter how many standard servings you usually have in a day. Values are approximate and based mainly on current British Dietetic Association food data.

How much calcium do adults need?

The NHS says adults aged 19 and over need 700 mg of calcium a day and should usually be able to obtain it from a varied, balanced diet. Calcium supports bones and teeth, muscle contraction, heartbeat regulation and normal blood clotting.

How this calculator works

The calculator multiplies each number of servings by an approximate calcium value and adds the results. Food calcium varies by product, recipe and fortification, so check packaging where possible. Fortified plant drinks are especially variable.

Worked example

One 200 ml serving of milk, one 150 g plain yoghurt and one 30 g portion of hard cheese contribute about 240 mg each in the BDA food table. Together, that is about 720 mg calcium.

Important limitations

This is not a complete food diary and does not measure calcium absorption. Some people have different requirements. The BDA notes higher guideline amounts for several groups, including adolescents and breastfeeding women, while medical conditions and osteoporosis treatment can change professional advice. Speak to a GP or dietitian if you have osteoporosis, coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, a restricted diet or concerns about supplements.

The NHS advises that taking high doses of calcium above 1,500 mg a day can cause stomach pain and diarrhoea. Do not interpret the calculator as a recommendation to supplement up to a particular number.

FAQs

How much calcium does an adult need in the UK?

The NHS reference for adults aged 19 and over is 700 mg a day.

Can I get enough calcium without dairy?

Yes. Calcium-fortified plant alternatives, calcium-set tofu, some green vegetables and fish eaten with bones can contribute calcium. Check labels because fortification varies.

Should I take a calcium supplement?

Do not decide from this calculator alone. Most people can obtain calcium from food, while some medical or dietary situations need individual advice from a GP or dietitian.

Are the food values exact?

No. They are approximate reference values; brands, recipes, serving sizes and fortification can change the actual calcium content.
