Fibre Calculator NHS

This independent UK fibre calculator adds up your estimated daily fibre intake and compares it with current UK guidance for your age group.

Daily fibre calculator

Enter the fibre shown on food labels or reliable nutrition information for everything eaten during the day.

What is the Fibre Calculator NHS?

This calculator is a simple daily fibre tracker. Add the grams of fibre from your meals and snacks, and it compares the total with the UK population recommendation for the selected age group.

UK fibre recommendations

Current UK guidance gives population-average fibre intakes of about 15 g/day for ages 2 to 4, 20 g/day for ages 5 to 10, 25 g/day for ages 11 to 15, and 30 g/day from age 16 onwards. The NHS also advises adults to aim for 30 g a day as part of a healthy balanced diet.

How to use the calculator

  1. Select the age group.
  2. Check food packaging or reliable nutrition information for fibre per portion actually eaten.
  3. Add the fibre grams for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.
  4. Select Calculate to see the daily total and comparison with the reference amount.

How the calculation works

The tool simply adds the entered fibre amounts: breakfast + lunch + dinner + snacks/other foods. It then divides that total by the age-group reference amount to show the percentage reached.

Worked example

An adult enters 7 g at breakfast, 8 g at lunch, 10 g at dinner and 5 g from snacks. Total fibre is 7 + 8 + 10 + 5 = 30 g, which equals the adult population reference amount.

Ways to get more fibre

The NHS recommends getting fibre from a variety of foods. Useful sources include wholegrain cereals and breads, wholewheat pasta, brown rice, pulses such as beans and lentils, fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and potatoes with their skins where appropriate.

Increase fibre gradually and maintain adequate fluid intake. Individual dietary needs can differ, particularly for people with bowel conditions or those following a medically prescribed diet.

Limitations

The result is only as accurate as the fibre values and portion sizes entered. Food composition varies between products and preparation methods. UK fibre recommendations are population guidance rather than an individually calculated medical requirement.
