NHS Cost Calculator
This independent NHS cost calculator helps you build a rough estimate of the cost of healthcare activity in England. It is an educational estimator, not an NHS bill and not a statement of what your own treatment actually cost.
Estimate NHS healthcare costs
What is this calculator?
NHS England’s National Cost Collection contains patient-level and aggregated cost information for healthcare services. The latest published collection is for 2024/25. It includes unit costs across admitted patient care, emergency care, outpatient attendances, mental health and community services. A real patient pathway can contain many different costed activities, so there is no single universal price for an appointment or hospital stay.
How to use it
- Count the healthcare events you want to estimate.
- Open the latest NHS England National Cost Collection and identify the closest relevant service or HRG/unit-cost category.
- Multiply the published unit cost by the number of matching events.
- Add the subtotals to produce a rough pathway estimate.
Formula or methodology
Estimated total cost = sum of (number of healthcare events × relevant NHS unit cost).
NHS England explains that patient-level costing records the resources and activities associated with individual patient events. These may include admitted patient episodes, outpatient attendances, emergency-care attendances, mental-health contacts and community-care contacts.
Worked example
Suppose a person wants to estimate the cost of two outpatient attendances and one emergency-care attendance. If the relevant current National Cost Collection categories show unit costs of A for the outpatient activity and B for the emergency activity, the calculation is (2 × A) + (1 × B). The values A and B must come from the appropriate NHS cost categories rather than from a generic price invented by this website.
Why we do not show one fixed NHS price
The cost of care depends on what actually happened: specialty, procedure, complexity, length of stay, staffing, drugs, devices, location and other resources can all affect cost. NHS England also uses Healthcare Resource Groups and patient-level costing information. A generic online calculator therefore cannot reconstruct an individual’s true NHS record or exact cost.
Is this what a patient pays?
No. This page estimates the resource cost of healthcare activity for educational purposes. It is not an invoice, charge or eligibility calculator, and it does not imply that an NHS patient owes the estimated amount.
2026 costing context
NHS England’s Approved Costing Guidance is updated annually. The 2026 guidance covers how NHS providers cost patient-level activity and submit National Cost Collection data. For historical unit-cost estimates, use the latest published National Cost Collection dataset available for the relevant financial year.
Limitations
This calculator cannot access your NHS record, identify every service you received, or calculate an exact personal cost. Published unit costs are averages or patient-level costing outputs for defined activities and should not be treated as the precise cost of a particular person’s care.

FAQs
How much have I cost the NHS?
An exact figure cannot be calculated from a short online form. Your care can involve multiple costed activities. The National Cost Collection can be used to build a rough estimate when the correct service categories are known.
Does the NHS publish healthcare costs?
Yes. NHS England publishes National Cost Collection data covering a wide range of services and healthcare activities.
Is an NHS cost estimate a bill?
No. An estimated healthcare resource cost is not a patient invoice or a statement that you owe that amount.
Why can two hospital visits cost different amounts?
The service, specialty, procedure, complexity, resources used, provider and length of care can differ, so one generic price is not reliable.
