How scoring works

Oxford University Innovation recommends scoring all 12 items from 0 to 4 and summing them. The total ranges from 0 to 48. A higher score represents fewer symptoms and better reported function.

Missing answers

The official scoring guide says that if more than two questions remain unanswered, an overall score should not be calculated. This simple calculator does not impute missing values.

Worked example

Item scores 4, 3, 3, 2, 3, 2, 2, 3, 2, 2, 3 and 2 sum to 31/48. The result should be interpreted in clinical context and can be useful when comparing change over time.

Limitations

The OKS is a patient-reported outcome measure. It does not by itself diagnose osteoarthritis, decide whether knee replacement is required or replace clinical assessment.
